PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Mallory Cheek had three hits, including her first home run of the season, but the Lamar State College Port Arthur Seahawks dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Galveston College Whitecaps by scores of 9-2 and 13-3 in Region XIV softball action on Wednesday at Martin Field.
Game 1: Galveston 9, LSCPA 2
Cheek had a double and a home run to account for two of LSCPA's three hits in the opener. Jalise Martinez had the other hit for the Seahawks. Sammie Paukert and Andrea Tagovailoa homered for the Whitecaps as part of a 15-hit attack. Abigail Moreno made a couple of sparkling defensive plays at third base for the Seahawks.
Game 2: Galveston 13, LSCPA 3
The Seahawks played small ball to perfection to build a 3-0 lead after five innings, only to see Galveston erupt for nine runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.
Moreno put down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to score Quinn Zaragoza in the first inning. Moreno stole home in the fourth inning to make it 2-0 before Zaragoza's RBI grounder plated Makayla Baker in the fifth inning.
The Whitecaps sent 12 batters to the plate in the nine-run sixth inning, capping the outburst with back-to-back home runs by Alayna Davis and Cassidy Bank. Any hopes of a Seahawks comeback were stymied when Galveston added four more runs in the final inning.
Jillian Vykukal had two hits for the Seahawks (8-24 overall, 4-10 Region XIV). Galveston improved to 33-11 overall and 9-5 in Region XIV.
Looking Ahead: The Seahawks return to action with a Region XIV doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday with a regional doubleheader at San Jacinto College. LSCPA hosts Baton Rouge Community College in a non-region doubleheader at 1 p.m. April 23 and Angelina College in a Region XIV twinbill at 1 p.m. April 25.
